Mission

  • To collaborate with other stakeholders of higher education for quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance.
Objectives
  • Conducting educational tour to the various places to gain the knowledge of habit and habitat of the wild life.
  • Giving exposure to the students by visiting Indian institute of science, fisheries, sericulture, apiculture, poultry farms, Zoo, Research etc. from the related branches of knowledge.
  • To create awareness of INSITU conservation of wild life.
  • The dept. has five big windows & has a good ventilation.
  • The attender of the dept. maintain very good hygienic environment & also in lab by cleaning and washing the floor every week.
  • The dept. has its own library with more than 175 books and 48 e-books pertaining to zoology

HISTORY: it was established on 01 July 1969 under the able guidance of Miss Dakshayani. With all interest and effort she developed the department. The department begins with minimum number of students i.e., 15.

In I year B Sc., in the beginning it was one man department. She used to handle both PUC and degree classes also most successfully. There was a common lab for both Botany and Zoology.

Golden era: Prof. K Kalidas took charge as head of the department in the year 1971. He hails from Eluru of West Godavari district, AP. After graduation he worked as a demonstrator in the same college for two years. Later he did his

M Sc in Agra University with specialization in Ichthyology. Under his able guidelines and endless efforts the department blossomed like a fragrant flow and flourished well. He developed the department by providing equipments, bottle specimens, slides, microtome, OHP and charts etc. He used to take students for education tour to study animals in their natural habitat. He encourages the staff to enlighten the students. He was a guide; confidence and a ray of light forth staff and students of zoology until his retirement in 2001. He donated all his valuable books to the department as a token of his memory. Even after his retirement he lives as a light in the hearts of staff and students.

Mean while Prof. Mallikarjunaswamy and Prof. D Babu Vijaykumara Reddy joined the department him in 1971; to assist him, with full cooperation, to develop the department. Prof. Mallikarjunaswamy took charge in 2001 as HOD and Prof. D Babu Vijaykumara Reddy took charge in 2005. In 1977 Mr Mallinath joined as an attender to the department. In 1983 Sri PM Jayadevaiah and Sri Nataraj joined the department; in 1992, Sri M Girish joined the team. In 2010 Mr. C N Venkatesh joined the department.

Present scenario: Whole team of qualified and dedicate staff members, the department thrive well, getting 90+% results and aims at integral and personalize education of the students providing well planned teaching, field work, seminar, assignment and education tour etc.

The strength and success of the department lies in the members of the staff who are continuously updating themselves through self-study. To provide proper teaching, classes are held regularly and syllabus is covered through proper planning in the department. If necessary extra classes are taken, and for weaker students additional care were taken. Classroom teaching is supplemented by practical classes, tutorials, seminars, discussions and field visits. Teacher updates themselves for discharging their teaching responsibilities by attending seminars refresher and orientation courses at regular intervals.

Facilities: the department develops sufficient infrastructure facilities. To quote, the department provides visual equipments like bio visual charts, over head projectors, smart board, etc. the department provides sanitary facilities, internet facility, desk top computer, refrigerator, etc. during leisure hours students are allowed to work in the laboratory. The department monitors overall performance, of students through regular tests, assignments, two tests, etc.

Infrastructure: we are having 2 labs, one general and second physiology with smart board, internet facility, two computers, microtome set, charts 59, slide cabinet 2, epidiascope, Nikon camera, automatic BP monitor, blood glucose monitoring system, blood cell counter 2, Nikon 30 binocular, compound microscopes 30, dissection microscopes, 12, centrifuge 1, chart cabinet, OHP, refrigerator, weighing machine, incubator 2, hot oven, etc.

In addition to these the department is having its own library, consisting of about 150+ books. Depending on their requirements students are allowed to take for reference and better use of the books, internet facilities.

Zoology museum: our department with a well displayed specimens of different species its number is about 160+.

Innovative practices: the students are very much acquainted with smart board utilization, power point presentation to the understand the subject. The students under took seminars to practice subject presentation fluently, writing assignments to search for new horizons in the subject; involving in group discussion to share knowledge among themselves under took projects to know how the actual facts and figures and presenting in scientific manner. It also helps them to undertake future self-employment venture.

They are also participated in debates, quiz, science exhibitions of intercollegiate state level.

Environment awareness: our department is in coordination with Dept. of Forest, Govt. of Karnataka to study the biodiversity of cataloging plants and animal species and give emphasis on native species.

Pollution free campus: our students also actively involved in the following activities. To reduce the carbon emission and preserving the fossil fuel for future generation we are by practicing 'no vehicle day' on every Wednesday.

Blood donation camp: our students donating blood to needy people by that they are practicing giving to society and sharing and surviving other individuals from death.

Planting of saplings: to reduce stress on environment and to cope up oxygen release to the atmosphere and becoming and built environment consciousness, our students actively participating a 'lab to field' practice. They are planting different species of saplings in the campus for eco- balance.

He served as BOE Chairman of Davangere university. And presented paper in international conference and published articles in ISBN magazines
